- What does a High Radon Area mean for a buyer?
- Houses built after 1998 in a High Radon Area must have a radon barrier. Older houses usually have none, and one in five will test above the reference level. It costs €50 to €60 to test after you move in and €1,500 to €3,000 to fix. Ask the seller for any test result.
- Why does radon vary so much within a county?
- Radon comes from uranium in the underlying rock. Granite and some limestones give high readings; the map follows the geology, so it changes over a few kilometres. The exact Eircode grid square is what matters.
